Has success turned people from God?

October 21, 2012

DEAR EDITOR:

Where should God send Jonah? Fill in the city. A second question could ask, how long is God going to give America to repent and change its ways? Nineveh changed. Will America?

How long has America been walking away from God's commands and doing it my way? As I listen to political ads on TV, I am reminded that LBJ started welfare, and we should not let the other candidate reduce welfare. What did America do before welfare? Was it not the way of churches to take care of feeding the hungry and helping the unfortunate?

Is this when America turned from God? Or did it begin even earlier than this? Was it not success in a prosperous U.S. that led many to believe they were responsible for their own success? Success has led too many to believe they do not need God, but I believe they are totally wrong. When did America stop obeying God's call to love and look after the least of His children? Yes, in times of disaster, Americans give generously to people all over the world, because God has blessed us many times over. If you are not blessed, I suggest taking a trip to Africa, India or South America.

False teachers offer lies that give temporary comfort, but also give us long-range punishment. Are we not living in fear of God, because a few have voiced (loudly, I might add) antichrist messages; messages that we are listening to instead of listening to God. Pride is hurting America. What is happening in the U.S. today is God's way of saying "wake up." We want all of God's blessings without knowing or having a relationship with God. He is not pleased with those only seeking what they can get.

God has spoken to us again and again, but we refuse to obey His commands. God tells us, "I will cleanse them of their sins against me and forgive all their sins of rebellion." How will he do this? Not until we acknowledge that God exists. If you don't believe He exists, I ask who invented fruit trees, vegetables and animals. And if this is not enough proof, just look at how the body functions and then take a breath of air. Wouldn't it be better to seek the Lord in times of prosperity than to wait until His final judgment is upon us?

Americans are overall good people and do much to help others in this world, but we need to move from duty to delighting in God's word. We need to strengthen our relationship with Him. We need to get to know God so the Holy Spirit can come live within us. God alone is good. Don't settle for second best. Wouldn't it be better to seek the Lord in times of prosperity than to wait until His final judgment is upon us? America should bless God.
