State can profit from operating turnpike

October 21, 2012
Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

DEAR EDITOR:

This letter is about the article ''Pike lease still in plans?'' You better believe it is in the plans. Why? Because Gov. Kasich is extolling the millions of dollars that will be flowing into the state coffers if he can get any kind of a deal he can sell to the citizens of Ohio.

Those dollars will be an illusion. No private entrepreneur is going to come in with millions of dollars if he or she is not going to make a profit, and you cannot limit that profit. So, the long and short of it is, the taxpayers of Ohio will be the ultimate losers. Make no mistake about that.

If a private firm can pay millions of dollars for the ''rights" to the Ohio turnpike and make a profit, then the state of Ohio should be able to do the same thing.

It is time for the governor to bring those brains that he has brought into his inner circle, and have them solve the problem of how the state of Ohio can operate the toll road and make a profit that is needed to make capital purchases as needed to maintain that toll road and keep tolls within reason for everyone concerned.
