NILES 1, CHAMPION 0: CHAMPION - In probably the upset of the night, the Niles Red Dragons defeated the Champion Golden Flashes in a Division II sectional semifinal.

The only goal of the night came in the middle of the second quarter. J.C. Pierko took a throw in, which was headed in by Grant Martin.

The Red Dragons improve to 4-12-1 and advance to take on the top seed in the district, Lakeview, on Saturday.

Champion finishes the season with a 10-4-3 mark.

MAPLEWOOD 4, BLOOMFIELD 0: MECCA - Four different players scored for Maplewood as the Rockets defeated Bloomfield in a Division III, Kent district, sectional semifinal.

Derek Rae, Aaron Schwartz, Michael Smith and Tyler Rosenberger all had goals for the Rockets (8-7-2). Smith and Rae each added assists and Stephen Pop had five saves. With the victory, the Rockets move on to take on top-seeded Hawken on Saturday.

Ian Bacon made 22 saves in goal for Bloomfield (0-17).

After grabbing a 1-0 halftime lead, Kennedy rolled off two goals within a 5-minute span - 8 minutes into the second half by Josh Lubich and Bofenkamp.

Bofenkamp and Tyler Cole accounted for the Eagles' other goals.

Kennedy hosts Newton Falls Saturday at 1 p.m., in a sectional final.

NEWTON FALLS 1, ROOTSTOWN 0: NEWTON FALLS - It looked like the game was about to head to overtime, but with 37 seconds left in the contest, Newton Falls' Cody Peterson knocked in the only goal of the game, giving the Tigers the victory over the Rovers in a Division III, Youngstown district sectional semifinal.

Newton Falls' goalkeeper Ben Koontz had six saves for Newton Falls, which will advance to take on John F. Kenned on Saturday.

CORNERSTONE CHRISTIAN 6, BRISTOL 5, OT: BRISTOLVILLE - Chad Oliver scored five goals for the Panthers, but it wasn't enough to lead them over Cornerstone Christian in a Division III, Kent district, sectional semifinal.

Cornerstone Christian had a 4-2 halftime lead, then Oliver scored three goals in the second half. The Patriots scored one in the half, sending the game to overtime. The Patriots got the only goal of the extra period, advancing them to face Newbury.

Bristol's Lucas Chapman had 12 saves.

LORDSTOWN 6, JACKSON-MILTON 0: LORDSTOWN - Jake Jones scored four goals to lead Lordstown over Jackson-Milton in a Division III, Youngstown district, sectional semifinal.

Jireyes Rafidi also had a goal and Dustin Hajnosz had one goal and two assists. Chris Whitfield had 17 saves for the Red Devils, which now advance to take on South Range on Saturday in a sectional final.

Jackson-Milton's Graham Kiek had 23 saves.

LaBRAE 8, LIBERTY 1: LEAVITTSBURG - Tristan Ancell had three goals and an assist to lead LaBrae over Liberty in a Division II, Youngstown district, sectional semifinal.

Along with Ancell, Isiah Carmichael had two goals and Brandon Smith and Jake Rowe each added a score. Rowe also had two assists.

LaBrae now advances to take on Cardinal Mooney on Saturday.

VOLLEYBALL

BOARDMAN 3, HOWLAND 0: STOW - It was a fight to the finish of each game, but the Howland Tigers fell to the Boardman Spartans in three games.

Howland put up scores of 19, 19 and 22 points. Erika Lapmardo led the Tigers in points, aces, kills and digs. Megan Papalas added 28 assists.

The Tigers finish their season with a 16-7 record. Boardman improves to 16-7 and will take on Hudson on Thursday.

SOUTHEAST 3, NILES 0: BOARDMAN - Anlana Woodard had 19 kills and Tiffany Sanders served 16 points to lead Southeast over Niles in a Division II Boardman district, sectional semifinal.

The closest Niles got to winning a set was the third, when it lost 25-17.

Southeast advances to take on Hubbard in a sectional final.

HUBBARD 3, ALLIANCE 0: BOARDMAN - Marquette Gasser had 41 assists and Maris Sarisky had 15 kills as Hubbard blanked Alliance in a Division II, Boardman district, sectional semifinal.

Mogan Lopuchovsky added 20 points for Hubbard, which now advances to take on Southeast in a sectional final. The two teams will meet on Thursday.

HAWKEN 3, CHAMPION 0: LEAVITTSBURG - The Golden Flashes' season ended on Tuesday night by a three-game sweep from Hawken in the Division III, Leavittsburg district sectional semifinal.

Lexi Nasonti had nine points and three aces for Champion, which finishes the season at 6-16. Sierra Blackson had six kills and 14 blocks.
