Course gets best of Beechy

COLUMBUS - The Ohio State University Scarlet Course has literally made top-notch high school and collegiate golfers cringe.

Newton Falls senior Logan Beechy was no exception, but the Tigers golfer placed tied for 34th with Bexley's Grant Murphy with a 174 after Saturday's finale of the Division II state tournament.

Beechy shot 86 on Friday and 88 on Saturday.

"We're proud of Logan representing Newton Falls and making it down there," Newton Falls coach Scott Kernan said. "I believe that he's probably disappointed in his two rounds, but there's a lot of high scores out there from a lot of good golfers."

"It showed today it's a tough, tough course. That course just wears on you. I believe he got tired, mentally and psychically."

Beechy began Saturday's round quite well - getting pars on the first two holes.

Then, disaster struck.

"After that, we thought, he's going to get something going here today," Kernan said. "He pushed his next tee shot right and it went into the bunker. His bunker shot went deep, duffed a chip and ended up with a triple bogey."

Nonetheless, it was the first time a Newton Falls golf had been at state - something Kernan is proud to say.

"It kind of went a little downhill after that," Kernan said. "There's so many bunkers, long par 4s. The wind was a little longer than we expected today. Just played tough and we're happy he finished in the top half. We're happy for the experience."

Eaton's Cameron Willis won the D-II title with a 75-76151.
