The Division II district girls tennis tournament could've of been a launching pad for a decent area contingent to be at state in Columbus.
John F. Kennedy's Laurencia Lee, Cardinal Mooney's Kacy Haggerty and doubles teams from Cardinal Mooney, Struthers and Poland were all alive heading into Saturday's play at Harvard Park.
The top five doubles teams and top five singles advanced to state.
The only one to come through was the Mooney doubles team of Dominique Cicchi and Jamie DiDomenico, which beat Rocky River's Lucy Grierson and Alex Riegelsberger for third place, 7-5, 6-0.
This is the third straight year Cicchi and DiDomenico have made it to districts.
"I know attitude effects productivity and they just wanted it," Mooney coach Jimmy Leslie said. "They prepared very hard for this moment.
"The thing that catapulted them this year over previous years was maturity. Mentally, we talked about visualizing, being in that moment. Instead of being nervous, which you see out of a lot of the girls get nervous, they want it even more and earn their way to state."
Mooney's team will be a three seed at next week's state tournament.
"It's not enough for them to go to state, but they want to do well there," Leslie said.
Lee lost in straight sets to Orange's Adrian Young, 6-2, 6-1, ending the John F. Kennedy senior's career.
Haggerty lost to St. Thomas Aquinas' Neya Sterling, 6-4, 7-5.
Struthers' Anastasia Cardarelli and Missi Soldressen lost to Hathaway Brown's Sarah Adler and Rachel Persky, while Poland's Elise Eckman and Cara Palusak lost to Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin's Ivana Didovic and Christina Kircher, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Struthers' and Poland's teams were playing to get into the doubles fifth-place match.
However, Cicchi and DiDomenico are happy to be the last doubles team standing.
"They're not just proud to represent Mooney, but represent Youngstown and they know we're the only Youngstown team going down there," Leslie said.
This year, the Canfield player tried her hand at singles and is heading back to Columbus in the Division I tournament.
Pavlansky won her first match Saturday at Oberlin College - beating Lake's Katherin McCauley, 0-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Then, she defeated Medina's Ali Garrity, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2, to place fifth.
The top six seeds head to state.
