SUNBURY - It was a perfect way for the John F. Kennedy's boys golf team to end the day - even with a one-hour frost delay, as Saturday's play began at 10 a.m.

The Eagles finished strong, shooting nine shots better than Friday's round, ending with 681 and in eighth place in the Division III state tournament at North Star Golf Resort. JFK shot 345 on Friday and 336 Saturday.

Ashland Crestview beat Columbus Wellington School for the team title, 646-651.

JFK senior Stephen Macali and junior Billy Phillips ended their rounds with birdies.

"Great, great season," JFK coach Jim St. George said. "My two seniors, James (LaPolla) and Stephen, great way to finish their season. It was great because on the last hole, where the crowd was, Steve, his last shot, he chips in on the hardest hole on the course for a birdie.

"It was kind of a cool ending to a great season."

Ryan Fowler had JFK's low round with a 78, shooting better than his 84 on Friday.

"Just missed second-team all state by two shots," St. George said. "He had a nice round bouncing back from an 86 yesterday."

For the tournament, Phillips shot 86-82168, James LaPolla shot 83-84167, Macali shot 92-92184 and Daniel LaPolla shot 96-96192.

It's the best finish for the Eagles since finishing seventh in 2007.

"There's 226 schools in Division III," St. George said. "I told the boys to finish eighth is a very, very great season. They know it. It was a great experience and one they're never going to forget."
