‘Rock’ musical, ‘Alien’ prequel arrive on DVD

October 11, 2012
By ANDY GRAY Tribune Chronicle , Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

New this week on DVD and Blu-ray:

''Rock of Ages'' - The jukebox musical still running on Broadway makes a sloppy transition to the screen. It serves up the sounds, the hair and the clothes of the '80s and camps it up with a dose of theatrical excess, but the direction by Adam Shankman (who did much better with ''Hairspray'') verges on incoherent. The tone shifts from winking to self-mocking to earnest, frequently within the same scene.

Tom Cruise brings an admirable intensity to rock god Stacee Jaxx, but the performance feels as if it belongs in a different movie. Also, he's a supporting player (along with Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand and Paul Giamatti), and the leads (Julianne Hough and Diego Boleta) couldn't be more bland.

The movie is being released in an extended edition featuring scenes not included in the theatrical release. The disc also comes with the multi-part featurette ''Defining a Decade'' and selected songs. (Warner Home Video, $29.98 DVD, $35.99 Blu-ray)

''Prometheus'' - In this kind-of prequel to ''Alien,'' archeologists lead a mission, funded by the Weyland Corporation, to a distant star that may offers clues to the origin of mankind. Noomi Rapace, Logan Marshall-Green, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender and Guy Pearce star in a film directed by original ''Alien'' director Ridley Scott.

Extras include two commentary tracks, one with Ridley Scott and a one with writer Jon Spaihts and write / executive producer Damon Lindelof; deleted / alternate scenes including an alternate opening and ending; screen tests; and multiple featurettes. (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, $29.99 DVD, $39.99 Blu-ray/DVD/digital copy, $49.99 3D Blu-ray/Blu-ray/DVD/digital copy)

''E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial'' The Steven Spielberg classic makes its Blu-ray debut with a digitally remastered edition. Extras include two new featurettes - ''The E.T. Journals,'' which include never-before-seen, behind-the-scenes footage shot by cinematographer John Toll; and ''Steven Spielberg & E.T.,'' an interview with the director reflecting back on the making of the film. Also included are deleted scenes and featurettes included on past editions. (Universal Studios Home Entertainment, $19.98 DVD, $34.98 Blu-ray/DVD/digital copy combo)

''Magical Mystery Tour'' - The Beatles' third film project, remembered more fondly for some of its songs (''Fool on the Hill,'' ''I Am the Walrus'' and the title track) than for its cinematic content, makes its Blu-ray debut. The package includes an 8-page booklet, commentary track by Paul McCartney, multiple featurettes, outtakes and new edits of some of the musical performances that include previously unseen footage. (Capitol, $19.98 DVD, $29.98 Blu-ray)

''The Raven'' - John Cusack plays Edgar Allan Poe, and in this film the macabre author is turned investigator as he helps police catch a killer who is drawing inspiration from Poe's stories. (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, $29.99 DVD, $39.99 Blu-ray)

''The Giant Mechanical Man'' - Jenna Fischer, Chris Messina, Topher Grace and Malin Akerman star in a romantic comedy written and directed by Fischer's husband, Lee Kirk. (New Video Group, $26.95 DVD)

''Shut Up And Play The Hits'' - This documentary chronicles the final show by LCD Soundsystem at Madison Square Garden in 2011. The full concert, with appearances by Arcade Fire and Reggie Watts, is included on the disc. (Oscilloscope Laboratories, $34.99 DVD, $39.99 Blu-ray)

''Werewolf: The Beast Among Us'' - This variation on the werewolf myth tells of a 19th century European village terrorized by a creature whose reputation brings bounty hunters, thrill seekers and other to the region to destroy it. Steven Rea, Guy Wilson, Ed Quinn, Stephen Bauer, Adam Croasdell and Nia Peeples star.

The disc includes an unrated edition of the movie, deleted scenes, three featurettes and a commentary track with director Louis Morneau and producer Mike Elliott. (Universal Studios Home Entertainment, $29.98 DVD, $34.98 Blu-ray)

''30 Beats'' - This comedy revolves around a group of New Yorkers connected through their sexual encounters over a steamy summer. The cast includes Paz de la Huerta, Justin Kirk, Ben Livin, Lee Pace, Condoa Rashad, Thomas Sadoski and Jennifer Tilly. (Lionsgate Home Entertainment, $27.98 DVD)

''The Obama Effect'' - Charles S. Dutton co-wrote, directed and stars in this feature about a man whose obsession with helping to get Barack Obama elected president strains his relationship with his friends and family. (Arc Entertainment, $14.99 DVD)
