Peace Award banquet planned

PEACE AWARD BANQUET SET: The Mahoning Valley Task Force on Crime and Violence Prevention's 16th annual Peace Award banquet will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at Mount Carmel Parish Hall, 343 Via Mount Carmel, Youngstown. The theme is "Recognizing and Promoting Cross-County Efforts in the Valley." Keynote speaker is Stephen Schumaker, deputy attorney general for law enforcement, who oversees the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and also the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy. This year's recipients are: former Youngstown mayor Jay Williams and former Warren mayor Michael O'Brien, the Rev. Ed Noga, Cindy Michael (with the Lena, Christian, Mason Foundation), Detective Chuck Swanson (with the Youngstown Police Department and Crime Stoppers), YMHA, YSU Upward Bound, and Gail Stark (with Blight to Life / Trumbull County Art Outreach). PET IDENTIFICATION OFFERED: A pet identification event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Ohio Puppy, 3620 Belmont Ave., Youngstown, sponsored by the Baltimore Life Insurance Company and Ohio Puppy.

AUTHOR TO SPEAK: Author Carol Higgins Clark will speak at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Library Literary Society meeting at the Youngstown Main Library, 305 Wick Ave. The library will be closed all day so the building can be prepared for the event.

FOOD PROGRAM CANCELED: The Community Action Food Program at Trinity Baptist Church scheduled for Friday has been canceled. It has been rescheduled for 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 9.

CHURCH HOSTS CORNHOLE: First Baptist Church of Howland will host a cornhole tournament at noon Saturday with funds to benefit T.E.A.C.H. Basketball Organization. There will be cash prizes awarded. Early bird entry fee of $40 is due - call George Davis at 330-518-4807.

VIENNA HELPS PANTRY: The Vienna Neighborhood Watch, Vienna Township Police Department, Baker and Currie Elementary Schools have teamed up for the fourth annual food pantry collection for students in kindergarten to sixth grade. The deadline for collecting items will be Oct. 23 with seven plastic pumpkins to be donated. The Zydyk Farm will donate pumpkins with drawings to be held for students.
