Delbert C. Sims 1925-2012

CHAMPION - Delbert C. "Red" Sims, 87, of Champion, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital.

He was born July 2, 1925, in Redhouse, Md., the son of Raymond and Della Maude Lipscomb Sims, and had lived in Trumbull County since the 1960s.

A World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, Mr. Sims had worked as service manager for HR Hill.

A member of Tod Avenue United Methodist Church, he enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and all things outdoors. Delbert had an exquisite sense of humor, which his family and friends were blessed to enjoy. He was a great sports fan and was especially fond of the Cleveland Cavaliers. From his roots in West Virginia, he brought regional cooking for his family to experience, most notably buckwheat pancakes. He was a favorite of small wild animals, who routinely made him their friend.

Surviving are his wife, Grace "Madeline" (Bolyard) Sims, whom he married Jan. 7, 1961; two children, Donald (Liz) Sims of Geneva and Joann (Mark) Sowa of Champion; two grandsons, Nolan and Dylan Sowa; two stepgrandsons, Ryan (Lisa) and Cory Geho; three stepgreat-grandchildren, Tyler, Sophia and Griffin Geho; and a sister, Jessie Winters of Eglon, W.Va.

Preceding him in death were his first wife, Helen Marie Pennington Sims, whom he married Nov. 30, 1946, and who died in 1950; and two sisters, Leota Harsh and Alberta Moore.

Services will be 12:45 p.m. Saturday at McFarland & Son Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lutricia Thurston Hall officiating. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will take place 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Champion Township Cemetery.
