MECCA - Ernest R. Smith, 72, of Mecca, died on Friday, Sept. 28, 2012 at the Cortland Health Care Center in Cortland.
He was born on Oct. 10, 1939, in Andover, a son of the late Raymond Smith and the late Violet Smith.
Ernest was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during the Vietnam War, and he had worked a truck driver for 45 years.

He is survived by his wife, Lois M. Duncan Smith; two daughters, Joanne M. (Brian) Day of Gustavus and Julie A. (Brian) Lawrence of Warren; three sons, David L. Smith of Kinsman, Daniel B. Smith of Bristolville and Dennis R. (Leann) Smith of Mecca; a sister, Patricia Holden; and two brothers, James and Richard Smith. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Trisha Herald, Brian Day Jr., Carlie Lawrence and Brian Lawrence Jr., and Annabella, Morgan and Savannah Smith; and three great-grandchildren, Angel Kelley and Faith and Zachary Day.
Ernest was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Smith, and a brother, Earl Smith.
The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the West Mecca Township Cemetery.
