Postal branch moves carriers

Market St. office may cut hours

WARREN - Carriers formerly at the U.S. Post Office, 1312 W. Market St., have been transferred to the post office at 2807 Niles Road.

The West Market Street post office will remain open, but its hours of operation may be reduced, according to officials.

Post office boxes and other services will remain. Access to the retail lobby and to P.O. boxes will remain unchanged, as well as the area ZIP codes.

Currently, the office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, and 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

"The consolidation of post office locations is happening all over the county," David VanAllen, U.S. Postal Service corporate communications officer in Cleveland, said. "We may not save a lot of money at any individual location. It is an attempt to reduce our costs and save money.

"We are not closing the post office," he said. "We are analyzing the work load of our post offices to see if the hours of operations match the level of service needed for each location. The hours of operation at some locations may be reduced because of the service demands.''

VanAllen said the review of operations is in response to the postal service's multi-billion dollar budget deficit. The effort to consolidate, reduce the size of post offices that have lower traffic, and reduce hours of operations have stemmed from efforts to not close locations, especially in rural areas.

The new strategy is being implemented over a two-year, multi-phased approach and is not expected to be completed until 2014.

Meanwhile, on Friday, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said the agency will miss the $5.6 billion payment due to the Treasury on Sunday, its second default in as many months.

Donahoe says he's squeezed out all the cost savings within his power. The post office will hit a low point in cash next month but avert immediate bankruptcy due to employee reductions.
