WARREN - Police say a man was killed and a woman was wounded after they were shot inside a 2220 Oak St. S.W. home just after noon Thursday.
Reports said Jeremy Cole, 21, of Warren, was shot and killed about 12:10 p.m. at 2220 Oak Circle S.W. A woman who lived at the home, Melissa Putnam, was shot in the hand.
Neighbors described the incident as an attempted robbery. One said Cole and Putnam were inside when another man entered the house and opened fire.
An autopsy is planned for today.
Emily Allen, who lives across the street from the home, said she heard arguing about 20 minutes before several police cars showed up. She said she never heard any gunfire.
''We didn't know there was any shooting,'' Allen said. ''We heard someone yelling and fighting.''
Her father, Gail Wells, said the people in the home are good neighbors, and there hasn't been any trouble since they moved in.
Farther up the street, Sandra Cooper said she didn't hear any gunfire either and came out of her house when she heard all the sirens. She said she saw a someone in the front yard with what looked like a wound to his hand.
She said the shooting is the second one in the neighborhood in recent weeks; in the summer, a teenage girl was shot to death on Hamilton Street S.W.
''This is crazy. This is too much,'' Sandra Cooper said. ''This just makes people want to move away. I'm scared.''
Cooper and her husband, Matthew, watched as police conferred in the front yard of the home before going inside to search for evidence. As an officer walked through the front door with a camera, Sandra Cooper said she is afraid to live in the neighborhood.
Her husband said his house will go up for sale soon.
Michael Putnam said his cousin, Melissa Putnam, just moved into the home and her daughter was in school at McGuffey Elementary School at the time of the shooting.
He and his girlfriend, Alisha Webber, came after several people told them they heard on the scanner about the shooting. He said police would not give him any information so he was going to the hospital to check on his cousin.
The man's death is the fourth homicide in Warren this year and first since July 15.
In 2011, Warren recorded 10 homicides.
