The Youngstown Playhouse opens its 2012-13 Griffith Adler Actors' Series on Friday with ''The Women of Lockerbie.''
Written by Deborah Brevoort, it received the silver medal for the Onassis International Playwriting Competition and the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays.
The story is based loosely on factual events and recounts the bombing of Pan AM 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988. The play takes place seven years after the event and focuses on the story of Bill and Madeline, who lost their only son, Adam, in the tragedy.
Unable to stop grieving, the couple has come to Lockerbie to attend a memorial service. There they meet four women who are working to have 11,000 articles of clothing released to them. Olive, who spearheads this movement, tells us that the women wish to launder the clothes and return them to the families who lost their loved ones. Through this act of forgiveness and love, all of these people are able to heal and move on with their lives. Brevoort's script uses the structure of Greek tragedy and poetic language to tell its contemporary tale.
Playhouse Managing Director Mary Ruth Lynn directs a cast that includes Stephanie Cambro, Susi Thompson, Terry Shears, Tommy O'Donnell, Tanja Temelkoff, Jill Cataldi and Dana Dunnavant.
''The Women of Lockerbie'' will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday through Oct. 6 at the Youngstown Playhouse, 600 Playhouse Lane, Youngs-town. Tickets are $17 for adults, $14 for students and senior citizens and $10 for children ages 12 and younger. For reservations or more information, call 330-788-8739.
