Alumni Association to induct new members

The Niles Alumni Association will hold its annual dinner Oct. 21 at Ciminero's Banquet Centre.

Social begins at 5 p.m. and dinner will be served at 5:30. The cost is $30 per person and can be reserved by calling Joyce Mahan at 330-652-0870.

The committee will induct six new members to the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame this year. They are Linda Montevideo Bennett, Frank Fuda, Michael Lastic, Mary Lou Manning, Dennis Miller and Ralph Stiles.

Ralph Stiles of the Niles McKinley High School class of 1957, is retired from Starr Fabricating where he worked as a layout fitter. He was a member of the JayCee's for more than 10 years and helped with the organization of the Niles Halloween Parade. He was an assistant soccer coach in Niles and was coordinator of children's soccer at Pleasant Valley Church, Soccer on the Streets in Youngstown and head soccer coach for S.O.I.

Stiles is a board member at Victory Christian School and is a past president of Niles Frontliners. In addition to working on maintenance and upkeep of Bo Rein Stadium, he has helped with school levies for Niles schools. He has been married to his wife, Joan, for 50 years and they have three children and four grandchildren.

Dennis Miller is a graduate of the NMHS class of 1988. After attending Youngstown State University, he completed his education at professional golf management school in Philadelphia. He is a member of the Professional Golf Association of America and is captain of the YSU Men's Golf team. Miller became a professional golfer in 1993 and is currently golf director at Mill Creek Golf Course. He was recently appointed the executive director for Mill Creek MetroParks.

Professionally, Miller has won the 1996 Ohio Open and the 2000 Northern Ohio Match Play Championship. He also qualified for the 1012 U.S. Open in San Francisco, Calif. He is a four-year letterman for Niles McKinley and YSU golf merchandiser of the year from northern Ohio PGA in 2012.

He has been married to Denise for 14 years and they have one son, Nathan.

Mary Lou Manning is a graduate of the NMHS class of 1953. She is a graduate of Ohio Dominican University and has a bachelor of science degree in education. Manning was the head of the Home Economics Department at Willoughby-Eastlake Schools and was a volunteer for Birthright in Lake County Willoughby Hospital.

She is currently a member of the Niles Historical Society, Niles McKinley Alumni Association and the Buckeye Chapter of Multiple Sclerosis Society. She has two sons, John and Thomas and four grandchildren.

Michael Lastic is a graduate of the NMHS class of 1961. He is a former football player at Niles McKinley and earned a bachelor of science degree in comprehensive social studies at Kent State University. He earned a master's degree in secondary administration from Westminster college and worked as a teacher, coach and principal at Niles City Schools for 37 years.

Lastic is a former president of the Men's Democratic Club and is currently a Niles city councilman where he has served the community for more than 12 years. In addition to his involvement in many school and civic organizations, Lastic was the former principal at Edison Junior High and Niles McKinley High School. He is responsible for the reinstitution of the McKinley Alumni Association.

Lastic has been married to Carolyn for 44 years and they have two children, Michael and Jennifer, and two grandchildren.

Frank Fuda is a 1963 graduate of NMHS. He earned a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in administration from YSU and has taught school at both the Cleveland Public Schools and the Mahoning Valley Vocational School. He also was employed with Republic Steel and served as a councilman in the city of Niles. He has currently been serving the community as a Trumbull County Commissioner since 2007.

Fuda is a former JayCee's officer and is a member of the Niles Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Moose Club, Niles Frontliners, Scrappers Backer and the Northeast Ohio Federation of Teachers.

He is the former president of Niles Intramural Sports and former officer of the Mosquito Creek Development Committee. He also is a board member at the Trumbull County Technical Center and is a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

Fuda is married to Darlene and has three children, three step-children and eight grandchildren.

Linda M. Bennett is a member of the NMHS class of 1971. She has a bachelor of science degree in medical technology and master's degree in clinical chemistry at Youngstown State University. She is a Master of Pastoral Studies and a Master Herbalist with the School of Natural Healing. Bennett has been inducted into Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities and is a Paul Harris Fellow with the Niles Rotary Club. She is currently an agent with State Farm Insurance and Financial Services and is former laboratory manager of ClinLab, Inc., former chemistry director at Timken Mercy Medical.

Bennett also is an executive board member of The Avenue and Main Revitalization Committee, is on the Core Team of Catholic Women's Conference, Chairperson of the Friends of Chalate Medical Clinic and hosts mission trips to Chalatenango, El Salvador. She is an active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

Bennett has been married to Bruce for 37 years. They have three sons and one granddaughter.
