President to stop in Kent on Wednesday

President Barack Obama will be campaigning in Kent on Wednesday, an official with his campaign in Ohio announced Friday.

Further details will be released later.

The president's visit will be about the 20th the campaign has made in Ohio involving Obama, Vice President Joe Biden or first lady Michelle Obama since around July 2011. Obama also will travel to Bowling Green for a campaign stop the same day, according to the campaign.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his running mate, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, also will be campaigning in the Buckeye State next week.

The closest stop to Trumbull and Mahoning counties is an event with Romney in Cleveland on Wednesday.

Bond at risk for Amish hate-crime defendants

CLEVELAND - Prosecutors have asked a judge to lock up the remaining nine defendants still free following their convictions in beard- and hair-cutting attacks on fellow Amish in Ohio.

Seven other defendants have been jailed without bond since their arrests.

In a motion filed Friday in Cleveland federal court, prosecutors say the defendants out on bond have no likelihood of winning new trials, so the violent crimes deserve pre-sentencing lockup.

Ohio to test variable work-zone speed limits

COLUMBUS - Ohio transportation officials say a new pilot program will use signs that reduce speed limits in some parts of construction zones while allowing traffic to travel at normal speeds elsewhere in those areas.

The Department of Transportation says the Variable Speed Limit program is meant to help protect workers and travelers while reducing congestion and crashes.

Signs with flashing beacons will light up to indicate reduced speed limits in parts of construction zones while workers are exposed to traffic.

United Auto Workers offering flu clinic

NORTH JACKSON - United Auto Workers Local 1112 is sponsoring a flu immunization program at 8 a.m. Sunday at the union hall in North Jackson.

The shots will be offered until 2 p.m. or until the supply is exhausted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Cost is $16 per shot for adults and children. The shots are not recommended for children younger than 7.

A reduced cost of $14 is offered for Local 1112 retirees and spouses. The general public also is welcome to participate.

Grant geared toward young, urban farmers

Flying HIGH Inc. in Youngstown has received a $100,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture Grant to promote new economic opportunity for farmers, U.S. Rep. Timothy J. Ryan, D-Niles, announced Friday.

The grant money will be used to recruit and train young urban adults as farmers to grow and sell produce at farmer's markets in Youngstown and Mahoning County, according to Ryan. The program includes production and marketing education, support services, supplies and professional development.
