WIC to host open house

WIC PROGRAM CELEBRATES WITH OPEN HOUSE: The Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership is hosting a celebration of the Women, Infant Children program with an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the OCCHA Center, 3660 Shirley Road in Youngstown. The WIC program provides nutrition education, breastfeeding education and support to eligible residents.

At 1 p.m., the WIC staff will receive certificates for their service and dedication to the program. For information, call 330-747-7921.

FUND ESTABLISHED FOR NEWTON FALLS FAMILY: United Auto Workers 1714 is reaching out to the community to support the Greathouse Memorial Fund with a fundraiser spaghetti dinner from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the UAW union hall, 2121 Salt Springs Road, Lordstown. There will also be a 50-50 raffle with drawing at 6 p.m. All donations will go to the memorial fund.

In July, Kathy Cogley and her son, Everett Greathouse, were fatally shot in Newton Falls. A memorial fund has been set up for three surviving children.

HISTORIC HOME HOSTS OPEN HOUSES: The Girard Barnhisel House on North State Street will hold its monthly open house from 1 to 4 p.m. the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Girard Historical Society members will be available for guided tours.

PROBATE SEMINAR OFFERED: The 32nd annual Probate Practice Seminar is being held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Squaw Creek Golf and Country Club, Youngstown Kingsville Road, Vienna. The seminar is co-sponsored by the Trumbull County Bar Association and the Trumbull County Probate Court. Featured speakers are Justice Terrence O'Donnell and Justice Robert Cupp of the Ohio Supreme Court.

TRAIN SHOW SET: The Penn-Ohio Model Railroaders 17th annual Train and Toy Show will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Shenango Valley VFW, 439 E. State St., Sharon, Pa. Admission is $5 and children 12 and younger are admitted free.

TEEN SCENE PLANNED AT LIBRARY: Teen Scene Saturday for students in fifth grade and older will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Howland Branch Library. Participants will learn about different art techniques and create a masterpiece of their own design. Registration is required by calling 330-856-2011.

WORKSHOP PLANNED: YNDC Vacant Land Reuse Workshops will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at 725 Mineral Springs Ave., across from the Youngstown Playhouse. This week's free workshop is ''Pruning and Managing Community Forests,'' which will explain tree maintenance, including preventing disease and also how to recognize signs of trouble in trees.

Lots of Green, a vacant land reuse program, seeks to repurpose all land in a target areas and is helping groups create successful vacant land reuse projects in their own neighborhoods. Each workshop will demonstrate how to make use of vacant land.

RADIOTHON BEING HELD: Akron Children's Hospital Mahoning Valley is hosting the fourth annual "Miracles and Promises" Radiothon today at the Beeghly Campus, 6505 Market St., Boardman. The radiothon will be broadcast live from the main lobby of Building D from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and feature stories about local patients who have received services from the hospital.

Money raised during the event will benefit local children and families. Donors can call 330-746-9090, or 888-746-9890 at anytime during the radiothon to make a pledge. In the first three years, the radiothon raised nearly $400,000.
