Cortland church hosts peace event

PEACE CELEBRATION PLANNED: The fourth annual Cortland Peace Celebration will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 23 at Prince of Peace Church, 490 N. High St., Cortland.

Participants will walk to neighboring Cortland City Hall to hear the community choir and learn of peace developments. The Cortland Rotary Club will make a presentation to the city.

Following the event, participants can return to the church for crafts, games and a picnic. Parking is available at the church, at city hall and the soccer field. Participants are encouraged to bring peace signs or posters. In case of rain, all activities will be held indoors.

BLOCKWATCH SETS MEETING: The Girard Fourth Ward Blockwatch will hold a picnic social at 2 p.m. Sunday at Stambaugh Park pavilion. Regular meetings will resume in October at the Girard Multigenerational Center.

WINE TASTE EVENT PLANNED BY CLUB: The Jefferson Democratic Club of Trumbull County will hold a wine tasting party from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wine Styles located in the Giant Eagle Plaza in Howland. Cost is $15. Register by calling 330-394-2428.

CHARITY FISHING DERBY SET: A fishing derby to help a Warren girl with non-Hodgkins lymphoma is being held Sunday at Lake Milton. Dubbed the Team Summer Fish Derby, the event is from 1 to 5 p.m. at Green Acres Lake Park Resort, 15487 Creed Road. Advance tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for kids ages 5 to 11. At the door, tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for kids ages 5 to 11. There is no fishing license required and the event is catch-and-release only. GROUP HOSTS DANCE: Molly Maids will host the Ms. Molly Barn Dance from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the pavilion of the Mineral Ridge VFW, 3889 state Route 46, Mineral Ridge.

The dance is a fundraiser to help make a difference in the lives of women and children suffering from domestic violence. Tickets are $15 per person and $25 couple.

The event will include a deejay, Chinese auction, 50-50 raffle, and cowboy / cowgirl costumes. Tickets are available at the door or by calling 330-793-9900.

FUNDRAISER TO HELP NAMI: National Alliance on Mental Illness Mahoning Valley Chapter will hold a fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Chuck E. Cheese, with the agency receiving 15 percent of all purchases.

SUPPORT GROUP TO MEET: Chronic Fatigue and/or Fibro-myalgia Support Group will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church, 256 Mahoning Ave., Warren. For information, call 330-847-7001.

SPEAKER TO ATTEND EVENT: K. Carl Smith, who lives near Birmingham, Ala., will be the featured speaker at the Mercer County Tea Party in Mercer. The event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday on the east lawn of the Mercer County Courthouse.

Smith serves on the Amistad Commission, established by the Alabama state legislature to "promote the implementation of education and awareness programs in Alabama that are concerned with the African slave trade, slavery in America, the vestiges of slavery in this country, and the contributions of African-Americans in building the country."
