WARREN - Jamal Wright, 19, of Warren and formerly of Akron, pleaded not guilty this morning to a charge of murder stemming from the shooting death of a 17-year-old southwest side Warren girl.

Wright is facing a charge of murder with a firearm specification and third-degree felony charge of weapons under disability. He is being held in Trumbull County Jail in lieu of $2 million bond.

Wright is scheduled to appear in court again Wednesday before Common Pleas Judge W. Wyatt McKay.

Wright is accused in the July shooting of Zeboney Bess of 2520 Kenwood St. S.W. Bess was gunned down about 10 p.m. in the middle of the street less than a half-mile from her home.

Family members said Bess received threatening text messages from someone with whom she had been in a relationship. She was on her phone arguing with a caller when she was shot, police said.

Police said the shots were fired out of a dark-colored sport utility vehicle that drove past her. She was left lying in the middle of Hamilton Street with a gunshot wound to the head, police report stated.

She was taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital and flown by helicopter to St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, where she died.
