Pair dies in motorcycle crash early Sunday

MESOPOTAMIA - Two people are dead after an early Sunday morning motorcycle crash involving a deer on state Route 534.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash that killed Bruce A. Harrington, 55, of Mogadore, and Samantha N. Rafferty, 34, of Atwater.

According to the patrol, Harrington, the driver, and Rafferty were traveling south on state Route 534 north of Mesopotamia Commons shortly after 3:30 a.m. when Harrington hit a deer that had entered the road. The motorcycle overturned, and both people were ejected into a guardrail, the patrol said. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither rider was wearing a helmet.

Vienna hosts 9/11 memorial ceremony

VIENNA - The Vienna Volunteer Fire Department will hold a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the fire department, 833 Youngstown Kingsville Road.

The ceremony will be to remember those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and to pay tribute to firefighters and EMS workers.

There will be guest speakers and the laying of the wreath at the memorial.

The event will also mark the first anniversary of the placement of World Trade Center artifacts at the fire station. The artifacts are beams recovered from ground zero and given to the Vienna Fire Department by the Port Authority of New York.
