DEAR EDITOR:
Any time I am downtown, talking to our politicians, at the mall or in a restaurant, someone always wants to talk about SCOPE and "you aren't going to close the centers, are you?" I swear there are so many people in this community whose lives have been affected in some way by SCOPE , and never in a bad way.
Mom or dad, aunties and cousins go on the bus trips, sings or dances in the annual follies, learn crafts, how to tap dance, sing with a choir, play games, cook chili for fundraisers, and, we even have a railroad club. Our people have always donated energy and time to helping do caring projects for our elderly citizens too.
You see, we retirees like to be active members of this community. Being alone isn't for us. And watching TV or walking the mall isn't for us every day. This community is getting to be more of us "seniors" than ever anyway. Why do you think we voted for the senior levy? We are interested in every facet of making things better around here for seniors.
SCOPE was started 50 years ago at the YWCA by Roberta Graham and other ladies who thought having a place for retirees to go was a great idea. The fact that has grown and grown and has been supported by its members and this community for 50 years says it all.
Let's not back track in this community. Let's get behind getting things to the way they were at SCOPE and move on.
