WARREN - A 19-year-old Warren man was arrested early Saturday in connection with the July shooting death of a Warren teenager.

Jamal Wright, 19, is expected to be arraigned Monday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court on a murder charge. He was booked into the Trumbull County Jail at 2:04 a.m. Saturday after being arrested at his home.

Additional details about the arrest and murder investigation were not released Saturday.

Zeboney A. Bess, 17, 2520 Kenwood St. S.W., was walking about 10 p.m. near 2057 Hamilton St. S.W., less than a half-mile from her home, when she was shot in the middle of the street.

Family members said Bess received threatening text messages from someone with whom she had been in a relationship. She was on her phone arguing with a caller when she was shot, police said.

Police said the shots were fired out of a dark-colored sport utility vehicle that drove past her. She was left lying in the middle of Hamilton Street with a gunshot wound to the head, police report stated.

She was taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital and flown by helicopter to St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, where she died.

A man was taken into custody the same night as the shooting but was released without being charged.

Zandra Bess, 26, said two days after the shooting that her sister planned to pursue her general equivalency diploma next school year and that she recently passed the Air Force test and wanted to become a pilot in the military, much like one of her older sisters, who is serving in the Marine Corps.

The homicide is the city's third this year and could be the fourth if police determine that another man whose body left in Warren Township was killed in the city.
