Founders Day at Arms Museum

MUSEUM CELEBRATES 138 YEARS: The Arms Family Museum, 648 Wick Ave., Youngstown, will host its annual Founders Day open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday in celebration of the 137th anniversary of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society.

The free event features tours of the museum, historic photographs, pioneer era games, demonstrations of straight key Morse code, children's indoor and outdoor activities, Civil War era laundry, dress-up clothes and crafts. A new exhibit featuring architectural elements is opening, and a walking tour of Wick Avenue will be conducted at 1:30 p.m.

SURVIVORSHIP DAY SET: The Valley Care Trumbull Memorial Hospital, in collaboration with the American Cancer Society and Trumbull Memorial Health Foundation, will sponsor the 23rd annual cancer survivorship day from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Lincoln School, 2253 Atlantic St., Warren.

The day provides an opportunity for cancer survivors, family members and friends to celebrate success in the fight against cancer. The free celebration includes an art display, ''Oncology on Canvas,'' a variety of exhibitors and a butterfly release.

There will be entertainment and refreshments.

HISTORIC HOME TO BE OPEN: The John Stark Edwards House and Museum, ordinarily open the first Sunday of every month, will instead be open from 2 to 5 p.m. this Sunday because of Labor Day.

CONCERT ORGANIZED: The Wounded Warriors and Gold Star Mothers benefit concert will be held starting at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Yankee Lake Ballroom, state Route 7, and feature various live bands performing at 6:30 p.m. A mini buffet is at 6 p.m.

ASSOCIATION TO HEAR ABOUT HOUSING: The Northwest Neighborhood Association will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Grace United Methodist Church, 1725 Drexel Drive, Warren. Guest speaker is Michael Keys who will discuss housing demolitions. There will also be a candle sale fundraiser.

STAPLES COLLECTS SCHOOL SUPPLIES: Staples, 6004 Youngstown Road, Niles, is holding its fifth annual national school supply drive. All school supplies and donations will be given locally to the Boys and Girls Club of Youngstown to ensure they get into the hands of disadvantaged youth for the new school year.

The drive encourages local young people to collect school supplies and drop them off through Sept. 15. For information, call www.staplesforstudents.org

RIBBON CUTTING SET: Trumbull County's Own Diamonds In the Rough will be officially introduced to the community with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon Saturday at 1429 Parkman Road, Warren. The ceremony will include guest speakers, activities for the children, introduction of the organization and staff to the community, and food vendors.
