WARREN - An Akron man was recovering from gunshot wounds he suffered Monday night after police said he was shot by another man on Burton Street S.E.

Marcel D. Tipton, 26, 1079 Magdalyn Drive, Akron, was shot in the arm and suffered a more serious wound to his abdomen or side about 9:30 p.m. following a confrontation with a man he had argued with in the past, police said.

Tipton was taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital and then to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. Police said the wound to Tipton's torso was the most serious, but he appeared to be recovering Tuesday afternoon.

Uniformed officers called out detectives following several shots that were heard by neighbors in the area.

Tipton, according to reports, was hit with gunfire in the 1600 block of Burton Street S.E. and then ran another block before be was found lying on the pavement in the 1700 block of Burton.

"He called out for someone to call for 911," said Pierre Williams who lives in the 1700 block. "I was already on the phone. I called twice."

People in the neighborhood already were coming out on the street trying to find out what was happening.

Williams said Tipton was given water.

Officers walked the area where the shooting occurred until a detective taped off an area and began searching for shell casings.

Police said Tipton was known to visit a girlfriend in Niles and has acquaintances in Warren.
