VIENNA - A Bristolville scout has completed his Eagle Scout project by building a playground for Hannah's House in Vienna.
Stephen Sprague Jr., 17, a scout with Troop 75 in Bristolville for the past five years, said the swingset, slide and climbing unit were completed this past weekend by scouts and volunteers.
Hannah's House is part of the Warren Family Mission and helps women with challenging issues. Their children often visit them and now have a play area.
Sprague said a fundraiser held last month selling 400 pork lunches generated nearly $3,000.
His father, Stephen Sprague Sr., and his scout master, Jeff Orr, both said the project was an ideal one.
Sprague said for his Eagle Scout project he thought of different ideas.
"We work at the Warren Family Mission a lot, and I had heard of Hannah's House. We came here and asked if they needed anything, and the idea came up with playground equipment with slide, sandbox, and climbing unit,'' he said.
He said the hardest part was the fundraising, but the $3,000 paid for the equipment and wood with volunteers, scouts and Sprague's relatives helping to complete the work.
"I'm hoping this benefits them. They seem really grateful with it,'' he said.
Sprague, a senior at Bristol High School, is getting the project completed before he turns 18 in December.
Terry Masciolou, director of Hannah's House said the home offers a one-year program for women dealing with alcohol and drug issues.
She said the children come to the home to see their moms on the weekends and now have an outside place to play.
"It was a super idea and very nice addition that was needed and appreciated," Masciolou said.
Stephen Sprague Sr. said his son worked very hard planning the project.
"It was a good choice for a project," he said.
