WARREN - For the past few weeks, the Warren YMCA has seen close to $50,000 worth of improvements including the replacement of 30 windows and refinishing of a large gym floor.
Rich Denamen, interim director, said all the windows on the first and second floors of the building were replaced.
"We were in the process of doing a window campaign to get new windows. Whatever windows were sold, we used those dollars to make other improvements at the YMCA," he said.
He said all 30 windows were sold.
He said a grant from the Youngstown Foundation was used for refinishing the big gymnasium floor.
Denamen said the floor originally was a dark brown shade and was very slick, having aged over the years. It needed stripped down and refinished.
"It needed to be done. It has been many years since it was done," he said.
One more project is installation of a 80x30-foot special sport contour flooring all-purpose room in the basement floor where there are cycling classes.
Denamen said volunteers will help install the floor which can be placed over the old carpet.
Also done this summer were remodeling of the main lobby, painting of the men's locker room and installing new benches.
The big gymnasium, located on the second floor, is scheduled to be open on Sept. 4.
Denamen said work on the floor included sanding the floor down to the wood and putting on two coats of sealant which made it lighter and brighter in color.
"We had about $50,000 worth of renovations which was made possible by volunteers who helped with the work grants and donations,'' Denamen said.
He said high school-age co-ed volleyball is starting the second week in September and will use the gymnasium.
GM Lordstown Community Relations Committee is sponsoring the intramural teen volleyball league to be held Sept. 10 to Nov. 12 and open to all high school students. The eight-person teams must include four females and four males all from the same high school. Games are played from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and 5 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Meetings are set for 6 p.m. Sept. 5 and 6. Call 330-394-1565 for more information.
