BLUE RIBBON RUN FOR CANCER: Join the Blue Ribbon Run for Prostate Cancer Awareness on Sept. 9 at Wick Park in Youngstown and help save lives in the Valley.
The Blue Ribbon Run for Prostate Cancer Awareness includes a 10k and 5k run and a 2-mile walk.
Presented by the HMHP Foundation, the Blue Ribbon Race raises money to fund public awareness efforts in the Valley about the risks or prostate cancer and the importance of yearly testing. These educational efforts are developed by Man Up Mahoning Valley, a not-for-profit local organization whose goal is to save lives and enhance the prostate health of the men of the Mahoning Valley.
Robin Cole, former Pittsburgh Steeler All-Pro linebacker and a prostate cancer survivor, will be at the Blue Ribbon Race as the official starter for all three races. He will also speak during the awards ceremony.
Any race participant (walker or runner) who raises a minimum of $100 for Prostate Cancer Awareness will receive a giveaway sponsored by HMHP Foundation. The participant who collects the most sponsorship monies will be recognized at the Blue Ribbon Run awards ceremony.
The race will also reward the top three overall male and female finishers and the top three male and female in each age group. Race shirts are guaranteed to anyone who registers prior to Sept. 5.

The 10K and 5K events start at 9 a.m. while the 2-mile walk starts at 9:30 a.m.

ELIZABETH SMART KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT ANNIVERSARY EVENT: ValleyCare Health System of Ohio will host the Healthy Woman first anniversary event with keynote speaker Elizabeth Smart on Sept. 19 at the Mahoning Country Club, Girard. Smart, a kidnapping survivor and child protection advocate,will present "Overcoming Adversity," an inspirational message about life after a traumatic experience. In June 2002, at age 14, Smart was abducted from her home in Salt Lake City. Her kidnapping was a national news story until her ordeal ended nine months later.
The event starts with a free health and vendor expo from 4 to 6 p.m., open to the public. Health information and health screenings such as blood pressure, cholesterol and bone density testing will be available, along with numerous displays featuring a vast variety of products and services.
