The League of Women Voters of Greater Youngstown (LWVGY) stands with other state leagues in urging Secretary of State Husted and all Ohio county boards of elections to restore evening and weekend hours for early voting. There is a divide in Ohio. Some counties have chosen to offer early in-person voting during weekends and evenings while other counties have not.
When boards of elections reach a tie on the vote of restoring early voting, the Secretary of State breaks the tie. Secretary Husted said he will not order extended hours when breaking a tie. This means some counties will have early voting, while others will not. Many of the most populous counties, Cuyahoga, Franklin, Lucas, Summit, tied. These counties were hardest hit by long lines in 2004, before early voting was available. Limiting voting times to only business hours Monday through Friday creates a hardship on those with jobs or circumstances which limit their ability to vote under these board of elections rules.
The League of Women Voters of Greater Youngstown does not want a return to long lines that plagued the 2004 elections. Early voting works and ensures all eligible voters the ability to cast their ballots. Return early voting to all Ohio counties.
