A walk-through garden is being planned for Howland Township Park.
The park board has been working with Stanley Jones, academic program director for horticulture technology at Kent State Salem Campus, on the design and ideas for the garden that would be located in the northeast corner of the park north of the tennis courts.
Board members Jackie Mills and Jim Brutz said the 1,500-square-foot garden would include a walking area and a place for people to meet for events and educational programs.
Mills said for the design work done by Jones, the park board will present a scholarship to Kent State.
Plans are for the heart-shaped garden area with a walkway. As a fundraiser, people will be able to purchase bricks for the walkway in memory or honor of someone.
Mills said people also will be able to learn about the native plants and flowers at the garden.
The board is working to secure funding for the project.
Brutz said the board would like to get the first phase of the project done this year. He said a benefactor is planning to give some seed money so the project can be started this summer.
The goal is to get the project done by 2013.
The next meeting is 5 p.m. Aug. 14 with new park board member, Dr. James Lapolla, to attend. LaPolla was recently sworn in to the board by Judge Thomas Swift.
