Chevrolet July sales down

Sales of Chevrolet vehicles declined during July when compared to sales during July 2011, according to the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers' Association statistics.

In 2012, the number of Chevrolet vehicles sold in 21-county region totaled 2,339, compared to 2,552 sold in July 2011, an 8.35 percent decrease.

In spite of the decline, Chevrolet still sold the second-most cars among vehicle brands in that period.

Total vehicle sales from Jan. 1 through July 31 was 17,217 compared to 19,031 during the same period in 2011.

The report indicates there was an increase of more than 12 percent in new car sales among all vehicle brands during July 2012.

Truck lines Freightliner and International demonstrated some of the largest percentage growth in vehicle sales, with 148 percent and 75 percent sales growth.

The total number of cars and trucks sold in July in the region were 18,680 compared to 16,669 in July 2011, a 12.06 percent increase. The total Jan. 1 to July 31 sales were 123,252 compared to 118,134 vehicles sold in 2011, a 4.33 percent increase.

"It's nice to see the industry get back to healthy double-digit growth in July as we move through the summer months,'' Louis A. Vitantonio, president of the GCADA, said.

''As the new 2013 models continue to appear in local dealerships, sales should continue to grow. Consumers are also taking advantage of many of the sales incentives and lease deals currently on the market, which is becoming increasingly competitive.''

A total of 23 brands posted sales increases for the month when comparing figures to the same period a year prior.

Ford led the way with 3,180 vehicles sold.

Honda regained third place with 1,758 vehicles sold, an increase of a whopping 44.81 percent over the same month a year prior. Toyota came in fourth with 1,623 vehicles sold, another strong double-digit increase of almost 24 percent when comparing July of 2012 with July of 2011. The company's Lexus Division sales were up over 45 percent for the month.

Chrysler and Jeep continued to sell well, with a monthly growth of almost 30 percent over July of 2011's figures.
