DEAR EDITOR:
Once again we are in the midst of a political season. The dialogue has been pretty intense and promises to get a lot worse. I think we are at a crisis point in the history of our great country.
Many civilizations, when they reach a certain pinnacle of success and prominence, have fallen by the wayside and have become another footnote in history. Look at the Roman Empire, with all its might; England, upon which the sun would never set; the Third Reich, built to last a thousand years; and the former Soviet Union. Expectations of grandeur, but a reality of failure.
The reasons for the decline of many of the great societies vary, but one thing was a constant. The handwriting was on the wall for them all.
For America, too, the handwriting is on the wall and the lettering is quite large. The problem seems to be neither political party nor their candidates or leadership are able to read. Perhaps their aversion to truth is due to their desire to gather votes, but I believe there is something even more sinister at work.
There is a darkness in America which hides the truth. A darkness which lives to corrupt, to deceive and to destroy. The only thing that will defeat the darkness is the light of truth, honesty and love. Darkness fears the light and cannot survive in it. The source of the light we need is Jesus Christ. We can overcome greed, we can overcome pride and lust and addictions. We can overcome the darkness, but we must, as a nation, turn on the light.
