HUBBARD - Albert T. "Bert" Madeline Sr., 78, passed away Monday, July 30, 2012, at his home after a brief illness surrounded by his family.
He was born Aug. 26, 1933, in Hubbard, the son of the late Albert M. and Josephine V. Catalano Madeline.
A lifetime area resident and veteran of the U.S. Army, Bert served his country during the Korean War.
Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the military, Bert went on to earn his bachelor's in education from Kent State University and a master's degree from Youngstown State University. He began his teaching career for the Cleveland school district in the mid-1960s.
He went on to teach at schools in Youngstown and Kinsman, and retired in 1998 from the McDonald school system.
Bert was also the co-owner and operator of the Village Tavern in Hubbard from 1966 until 1986.
He was a devoted member of St. Patrick Church in Hubbard, where he served on the Parish Council, taught CCD and was a distributor of Holy Communion. He was a member of the K of C and gave unselfishly of his time volunteering to raise funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Bert served his community as a councilman of the 4th Ward.
One of his proudest moments was this spring when he was inducted into the Hubbard High School All Sports Hall of Fame.
He enjoyed woodworking, cooking, gardening and canning. Bert was known for the numerous handcrafted walking sticks and canes that he made and gave away to family, friends and complete strangers who were in need.
A wise and gentle soul, his greatest joys came from being able to provide for his family and spending time with them.
Bert will be dearly missed by the love of his life and best friend, Margaret "Peggy" Leslie Madeline of Hubbard, whom he married June 23, 1962. Together they shared 50 years of marriage, having just celebrated their golden wedding anniversary and created quite a legacy.
