Woman walks for breast cancer

July 11, 2012
The Niles Times , Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

The list of those affected by breast cancer goes on and on but for former Niles resident Megan Fedor, her family and friends are why she is lacing up her shoes to show her never-ending support in the fight to end breast cancer.

Fedor has been preparing for the 2012 Susan G. Komen Cleveland 3-Day, a commitment that includes walking 60 miles in three days to raise $2,300.

"I know far too many people who are currently fighting or have lost the battle with this disease,'' Fedor said. ''Thankfully I know several people who are survivors, and all of those people are who I'm walking for.''

Fedor attempted the three-day walk last year, but was unable to finish because of an injury. She described the experience as the biggest emotional roller coaster she has ever been on and is looking forward to trying it again.

''I learned a lot about this cause and about myself,'' Fedor said. ''I'm more determined than ever not only to finish all 60 miles this year, but also to beat my fundraising total from last year, $2,313.''

The Susan G. Komen Cleveland 3-Day is held Friday through Sunday from late July through November and consists of 14 events held in major U.S. locations, including Boston, Chicago, Michigan, Twin Cities, San Francisco Bay area, Seattle, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Dallas/Fort Worth, Arizona and San Diego.

Fedor will be walking in the Cleveland event that will begin Aug. 3 and will end with a closing ceremony on Aug. 5. Walkers cover about 20 miles a day with the support of hundreds of volunteer crew members.
