The John Pete Checker Tournament was held June 29 at the Ramsay Pavilion in Woodland Park.
The tournament is named for former resident John Pete, who spent time in the park teaching children how to play checkers. The tournament, named in his honor, is held as part of the summer recreational program at the park. Pete was a village resident, was retired from McDonald Steel and would challenge people to checker tournaments at the park.
Pete spent his retirement years in the park in the 1950s and 60s. The tournament has been held in the village for more than 25 years, according to Jack Evans of the McDonald Historical Society.
He loved to play the game and would play anyone no matter what their age, said Cindy Green, recreational director.
Winners in age division 6 and 7 was Samuel Gibbons; age division 8 and 9 was Taylor Tuchek; and age division 10 and 11 was Elliot Gibbons. There were 19 participants in the tournament.
The winners of the tournament will be announced during the Fireman's Festival breakfast on Saturday.
