Orchids & onions

July 21, 2012
Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

ORCHID: To the Warren SCOPE Center, which is attempting to help area caregivers by creating a support group for them and a respite program for the loved ones they take care of. Many people who are taking care of a loved one, such as a parent or spouse, often need time to do the daily tasks of life, or just have some time for themselves, but are not able to because there is no one to take care of their loved one while those errands or other tasks are completed.

ONION: To drivers who park illegally in parking spaces designated for the handicapped. It doesn't happen as often as it did in the past, due to increased public awareness, but it still happens.

ORCHID: For a summer mentoring camp at Agape Assembly Church Center in Warren. It will provide mentoring and education in addition to sports and recreation for children this summer. The program is in its fourth year and is designed to provide a safe place for local children to enjoy recreational activities and games while also receiving education.

ONION: People could do more to keep street storm drains cleaned so that during heavy rains, like some of the ones experienced this past week in the area, the water runoff has somewhere to go.

ORCHID: To the third group of individuals who completed the Trumbull County Family Court Dependency Treatment program. County Family Court Judge Pamela Rintala presented words of praise and encouragement along with certificates to the three people who completed the program.

ORCHID: For the third annual Kinsman Car Show to be held today, as well as the garage sales throughout the township. The car shown is being hosted by the Gustavus Masonic Lodge.

ONION: To Norfolk Southern Railroad officials for shutting down four major railroad crossings in Gustavus without alerting emergency responders to the closings. The four crossings shut down Wednesday were at state Route 87, Gardner Barclay Road, Davis Peck Road and Fisher Corinth Road and were all shut down at the same time, officials said. That poses a safety hazard.

ORCHID: To the local chapter of Parents of Murdered Children. It raised the organization's flag Thursday in observance of the July 6 murder of 15-year-old Everett Greathouse, who was shot to death along with his mother, Kathy Cogley, and stepfather, Rikki Cogley Sr., in Newton Falls.
