Mount Carmel fest kicks off

FESTIVAL KICKS OFF THIS WEEK: The 14th annual Youngstown Our Lady of Mount Carmel Italian Festival will be held from Thursday to July 29, featuring food, entertainment, games, wine tasting, children's activities, crafts and an auction. The festival will be held from 4 to 11 p.m. Thursday to Saturday and 1 to 10 p.m. July 29. On Sunday will be a Mass and procession.

SUPPORT GROUP SET FOR GRANDPARENTS: A support group for grandparent caregivers will be held at 10 a.m.Wednesday at Warren SCOPE Center, West Market Street. The program is for all those who are raising their grandchildren, with discussions about available resources, issues dealt with on a daily basis, and environmental support.

Plans are for the group to meet each month. For information, call 330-399-8846.

TRAINING PLANNED: The HandsOn Volunteer Network will offer a continuity of operations planning training at 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Girard MultiGenerational Center, 443 Trumbull Ave. Part of that responsibility is to develop a continuity of operations plan that will allow the agency to prepare and resume service after an emergency or natural disaster.

The training is $25 and includes lunch. Class size is limited and reservations are required at HOVN.org or at 330-782-5877. Training allows participating to attend the volunteer reception center training.

The VRC training is designed to walk participants through the process of how volunteers can respond and be deployed to areas during a disaster and emergencies.

CAR SHOW TO HELP FEED FAMILIES: The Arby's Cruisin' Crew and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers are teaming up to help feed people in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today with a pre-game car show at the Eastwood Field. The food bank will receive $4 for each car entered into the show.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. The first 200 cars will receive a dashboard plaque. Awards will be given at 3:30 p.m. For information, call 330-792-5522.

EVENT TO HELP INJURED GIRL: Tickets are being sold for the upcoming Team Marisa Kay Tailgate Party and Game to be held Aug. 31 at the Mahoning Valley Scrappers game at Eastwood Field, Niles.

Marisa Kay Vincent, 7, of Howland was injured by a Bobcat excavator in May.

Tickets are $8 and include the game and an party with music, a chili cook-off, dunking tank, children's activities, drawings and fireworks. All proceeds will be utilized to make handicapped accommodations to the family home and provide handicap accessible transportation.
