YOUNGSTOWN - A 3-year-old boy died Wednesday in the pool of his grandmother's South Side home, police said.

Police were called about 2 p.m. to 3515 Belden Ave., where they were met by a crowd of hysterically crying adults and children, according to a report from Tribune Chronicle partner WYTV 33 News.

The police report lists the child's name as Kaden, and he lived at 3511 Belden Ave. with his mother and father, Aaron and Tina Gump.

Marcia Braden, 65, the child's grandmother, was watching several children who had been swimming - while wearing flotation devices - in a 4-foot pool, according to police and 33 News. She took them inside to eat and play games.

One of the children told police he had been in the house for about 20 minutes when he decided to swim again. While in the water, he felt something bump his leg, looked down and saw Kaden.

The boy dove to the bottom and brought Kaden to the surface, where he laid him on the deck and yelled for help, police said.

Braden attempted to revive him with CPR and called 911, but the child was not breathing when officers arrived, the police report states.

The grandmother told police Kaden must have slipped out of the house and went into the pool on his own while the other children were inside.

The report does not list the ages of the other children who were there.

Braden collapsed as she talked to police investigating the child's death, according to 33 News. She was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment.

This is the fifth drowning in the region this month.

On July 7, Bruce Banks, 17, of Youngstown, drowned in the Logan Swimming and Tennis Club pool after he and some friends reportedly climbed a fence with some friends around 4 a.m. and jumped into the pool.

Also on July 7, Cory Lowder, 26, of Canton was rescued from Berlin Lake, but later died.

That same evening, Eli Miller, 21, of Middlefield, drowned in Mosquito Creek Reservoir after jumping into the lake from his fishing boat near the boat launching off state Route 88 in Mecca.

On Saturday, the body of Mark Goodrich Jr., 12, of Sharon, Pa., was recovered from the Shenango River in Brookfield. He had been missing since Thursday when he and some friends had been playing in a wooded area near the river bank.

This is the second time this year a toddler has drown in the Youngstown. On March 2, a girl died after falling into a what was described as small, sunken pool in the 300 block of South Hazelwood Avenue on the West Side. The girl slipped past a baby sitter and was spotted a short time later in the pool in a neighbor's yard.
