WARREN - A summer mentoring camp at Agape Assembly Church Center in Warren will provide mentoring and education in addition to sports and recreation for children.

Pastor George Johnson said the goal of the summer program, which is in its fourth year, is to provide a safe place for local children to enjoy recreational activities and games while also receiving education.

The program is for children ages 8 to 16, and this year there are more than 50 participants. It runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Thursday through Aug. 10.

Tony Brown, an instructor, said he meets with the boys daily and goes over selected words such as self control, character, integrity and love.

"We talk about the word of the day what it means and what they feel it means,'' Brown said.

In addition, Brown said he listens to anything the boys want to share about what is going on in their lives.

Brown said the mentoring allows for discussion on issues affecting the students' lives. He said students are given a short assignment to do at home to be discussed the next day.

"This gives them a chance to talk about things and get something off their chest. ... We encourage them to listen to the right voices and make the right choices,'' he said.

Jackie Brown, an instructor, said she works with the girls and also has them discuss a word of the day and share feelings.

"I let the girls open up and share their feelings and opinions on the word. They discuss how the word is used and also create scenarios learning the consequences of different choices and decisions,'' she said.

Johnson said the education and mentoring is important part of the program so the children can continue to maintain what they learn in school over the summer.

"We want to provide a safe place for the young people to come to and play and learn,'' Johnson said.
