Dr. Randall Tharp 1938-2012

HOWLAND - Dr. Randall G. Tharp, 73, died at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, July 15, 2012, at St. Joseph Health Center Emergency Room.

He was born Dec. 7, 1938, in Ashland, the son of Charles and Nina Scott Tharp

Randall was a graduate of Ashland High School, Ashland College with a bachelor's degree, and Kirksville College Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Mo.

He started his family medicine practice in Andover in 1966 and retired in 1990 from his family practice. From 1990 to 2011, he was a nursing home physician and medical director at area nursing homes.

He was the team physician at Pymatuning Valley High School in Andover for more than 25 years, first president for American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine, he was former chief of staff at Warren General Hospital, had been the former president of Andover Chamber of Commerce, the Monday Music Club at Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown, and was instrumental in building a satellite emergency room currently known as St. Joseph Emergency Room in Andover.

He was an avid sailor, enjoyed fly fishing, golfing and loved to travel.

Dr. Tharp is survived by his wife, Elaine A. Mazzochi Tharp, whom he married Sept. 4, 1976; his children, Lisa (Jim) Struna of Williamsfield, Dr. Jeffery (Carol) Tharp of Lake Milton, Robyn DiMauro of Howland and Toni DiMauro of Brooklyn, N.Y.; his grandchildren, Greg Struna, Ashley (Ryan) Fertig, Jacob, Gabrielle and Taylor Tharp and Alexa DiMauro; three great-grandchildren; his brother, James Tharp of Loudenville; and a sister, Margery Brubaker of Colorado.

Besides his parents, Dr. Tharp was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Tharp; and three sisters, Evelyn Boyer, Helen Clark and Rosemary Lynn.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Grace Fellowship Church with the Rev. John A. Temple officiating.
