Salvation Army offers cooling place

WARREN - The Salvation Army here is providing a place for people to escape the heat.

The cooling site, 270 Franklin St. S.E., is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. Water is available.

Capt. Charles Coffelt said the cooling station will be open throughout the summer.

Donations of water and snacks are welcomed to help those in need, Coffelt said.

Newton places fire levy on Nov. 6 ballot

NEWTON - Township trustees have approved placing a 1-mill continuous fire levy on the Nov. 6 general election ballot to pay the township's share for the joint fire district with Newton Falls.

Trustee Chairman Peter Augusta said Monday that the levy will generate $64,000 annually and be used to pay the township's share - currently $55,000. A 3-percent increase is expected for next year, he said.

The levy would replace a .5-mill fire levy that generates $14,000 annually.

Group needs help with flag collection

WARREN - The Trumbull County Memorial Day Association is picking up flags at 9 a.m. today at Oakwood Cemetery in Warren.

Volunteers are needed to help with the effort and will meet at the cemetery.

Flags were collected Monday at Pineview Cemetery.

'Racino' revenue tops $11 million

COLUMBUS - The first slots-like gambling machines added to one of Ohio's horse tracks have taken in more than $11 million in revenue during the facility's opening month.

According to data released Monday by the Ohio Lottery, the state's share of revenue from the video lottery terminals at Scioto Downs in Columbus is $3.7 million. That's more than the roughly $3 million officials estimated the machines would generate per month for the state. The money will help fund K-12 education programs in Ohio.

The roughly $7.4 million in remaining revenue goes back to the track, which is operated by Chester, W.Va.-based MTR Gaming Group Inc. The slots-like machines have been available to visitors since June 1.

Teen's murder trial to begin today

YOUNGSTOWN - Opening statements are expected to begin today in the murder trial of a city teenager.

Jury selection wrapped up Monday in the trial of Shonqualin Hendrix, 16, who is accused in the shooting death of Braylen Collins last July.

Collins, 17, was killed July 29 at the corner of Evergreen Avenue and Summer Street on the city's South Side.
