Ryan and Steelworkers urge jobs bill passage

July 3, 2012
By LARRY RINGLER , Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

WARREN - U.S. Rep Timothy J. Ryan, D-Niles, figures a turnabout is fair play when it comes to giving businesses incentives whether to locate work in the United States or overseas.

''Currently, we incentivize business to move to other countries. This is a 20 percent tax credit to move business from other countries to here. It's common sense,'' Ryan said after receiving an award from the United Steelworkers for co-sponsoring the Bring Jobs Home Act to lure employers back to the United States.

Ryan said the Senate appears ready to vote for its version of the legislation next week, adding President Obama supports the proposed law. He said the bill faces uncertainty in the House, where Republican leaders have been reluctant to bring it to the floor.

Darryl Parker, president of USW Local 1375 at the idled RG Steel Warren mill, said the economy will experience slow growth without the jobs bill. He added he'd like to see even more done for the industry.

''There needs to be an emphasis on funding for upgrades and improving the efficiency of plants,'' he said.

Ryan noted the U.S. has lost 5.5 million manufacturing jobs from January 2000 to January 2010, but said the sector has added more than 400,000 jobs in the past two years.

''We have the opportunity now to bring some high-end manufacturing back to the U.S,'' he said.
