TMH EARNS SEAL OF APPROVAL: Trumbull Memorial Hospital has earned The Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval for knee and hip joint replacement. The certifications were awarded for compliance with The Joint Commission's stringent national standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care. Trumbull Memorial is one of 14 Ohio hospitals to receive these certifications.
During a rigorous on-site Joint Commission survey conducted in April, Trumbull Memorial was evaluated for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patient and families, including infection prevent and control, leadership and medical management.
The Joint Commission knee and hip certifications are the most recent designations received by Trumbull Memorial Hospital's joint replacement program. The hospital is also a Blue Cross/Blue Shield Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacement.
Trumbull Memorial Hospital launched a construction and renovation project for a new orthopedic floor featuring 18 private orthopedic suites with walk-in showers and an expanded physical therapy and occupational therapy area with a new car transfer simulator and kitchen and tub model. The new floor will open in August.

PREVENT BLINDNESS SEARCHING FOR "MOST BEAUTIFUL EYES": Prevent Blindness Ohio is announcing the dates of the 2012 "Most Beautiful Eyes" Contest. The contest allows children across the United States the chance to win a $10,000 educational scholarship.
From June 25 through July 31, parents of children 17 and younger are encouraged to enter their child in the Prevent Blindness America "Most Beautiful Eyes" Contest by submitting a photo to the Prevent Blindness America Facebook page at facebook.com/preventblindness.
For the entire month of August, the public can vote online for their choice. The first 50 entries will receive a free pair of sunglasses. Each state will have one winner (void where prohibited), which will advance to the second round of voting.
Broadcaster Larry King will serve on the celebrity panel of judges as well as "Fox NFL Sunday" Host Curt Menefee.
The national winner and two family members will enjoy a weekend in Chicago to attend the Prevent Blindness America Annual Awards Banquet on Nov. 2, 2012, where the $10,000 educational scholarship will be officially awarded.

LUNG ASSOCIATION OFFERS AIR APP: The American Lung Association developed a free State of the Air smartphone application to help people monitor whether their air is safe to breathe.
This tool can be a valuable resource for people living with lung disease like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), people with heart disease or diabetes, as well as older adults and children. The app is also useful for planning outdoor activities hiking, biking or running.
Despite continued improvements in air quality, unhealthy levels of air pollution still exist in communities across the country.
The State of the Air app enables users to enter their zip code or use the geo-locator function to get current air quality conditions and the next-day air quality forecast. The app tracks levels of both ozone and particle pollution, and pushes out alerts if local air quality is code orange- unhealthy for sensitive groups - or worse. Depending on the severity of the day's air pollution, the app will provide vital health recommendations - advising that outdoor activities should be rescheduled or that people who work outdoors should limit extended or heavy exertion.
Whether the air is code green, "good," or code red, "unhealthy," the app allows users to share their local air quality via email, Facebook or Twitter. The app also provides users with the opportunity to sign up to receive information from the American Lung Association on topics of particular interest to them.
This air quality information is based on data made available to the public by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The American Lung Association app is available for Apple in iTunes and for Android in Google Play or at www.lung.org/stateoftheairapp.
