HOWLAND The Howland Fire Department is holding its annual Howland Safety Town from 9 a.m. to noon Monday to June 22 at Howland Glen School as a way to educate children on accident prevention.

Safety Town coordinator Kelly McGilton said the program introduces safety awareness and preventive procedures to preschool children using both an outdoor layout and and indoor classroom facilities.

During the 15-hour course, four and five-year old children learn safety procedures through their own involvement under the guidance of a teacher, firefighter, police officer and trained volunteers.

Children will practice and experience real life situation. They are trained to evaluate safe from unsafe and learn how to react safely when confronted with dangerous situations.

McGilton said children will be instructed on safety issues including pedestrian, school bus, seat belt, car, pet, fire, water, poison, bike, gun, and playground, how to deal with strangers, and child fingerprinting.

McGilton said the activities include a ride on a school bus. She said a highlight include children riding through ''Safety Town'' while learning the rules of the road and pedestrian safety. New this year is a Teddy Bear Hospital so children will know what to expect in emergency if one would happen to them. A graduation ceremony concludes the week.

McGilton said the program has been able to be offered to the children because of sponsors from the community.
