Howland Township will be celebrating its 200th birthday during its Independence Day activities July 3 and 4.
The celebration begins with the opening of the Howland Township History Center at 4 p.m. July 3.
The public is invited to join Joseph Howland's great-great-great grandchildren and members of Captain John Adgate's family as the first stages of the history center are opened at the township administration building. The display includes newly framed photographs donated by the historical society and portraits of Joseph Howland and his immediate family. Also to be unveiled in the meeting room are recently acquired and archived historical documents.
A bicentennial reception and open house will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. July 3 at the Butler Institute of American Art, Howland Branch. The public is invited to celebrate the township's birthday with current and former township officials and learn more about Joseph Howland and the township's first settler, Captain John Adgate. The National Packard Museum will display a Packard and a Sterling Knight that were built in Howland. Take II will provide entertainment and light refreshments will be served. There is no cost to attend.
The townships annual Independence Day celebration will be held from 10 to 3 p.m. July 4 in Richard E. Orwig Park and Howland High School. The day will begin with a parade will bicentennial-themed entries and will continue with music, food, children's activities, community organization tents and more.
