MCDONALD - Charles L. Friend, 84, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Northside Medical Center, Youngstown.
Charles was born Jan. 20, 1928, in Luke, Md., the son of the late Dayton O. and Lucille Wiltison Friend and stepmother Bertha Olive Friend.
Charles had worked for U.S. Steel from 1950 to 1979 and then worked for McDonald Steel as an electrician, retiring in 1992. He was a member of Boardman Baptist Church and enjoyed painting scenic pictures.

He is survived by his wife, the former Shirley Ann Stauffer, whom he married Dec. 3, 1951; five children, Elaine (Dan) Kovach of Liberty, David (Audrey) Friend of McDonald, Nancy (Steve) Pruneski of Green, Mark (Jennifer) Friend of Hubbard and Lisa (Andy Timko) Friend of Canfield; 11 grandchildren, Kevin and Jacob Kovach, April and Mike Friend, Lindsey, Lauren and Stephen Pruneski, Justin and Ian Friend, Miles Dunlap and Alex Graff; six brothers, Marvin (Louella) Friend of Girard, Ray (Jenny) Friend of Hubbard, Dale Friend of McDonald, Larry (Linda) Friend of Vienna, Gary (Nancy) Friend of Cortland and Darell (Donna) Friend of Warrenton, Va.; and five sisters, Barbara Mandley of Fairfax, Va., Juanita (Richard) Barney of McDonald, Linda (George) Cameron of Crofton, Md., Janet (Tom) Riley of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Carol Friend of Falls Church, Va.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ronald and D. Gene Friend; and a son-in-law, Martin Graff.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Boardman Baptist Church, where the family will receive relatives and friends from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Visitation will also be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard.
Interment will take place in Green Haven Cemetery with military honors.
