COLUMBUS - Newton Falls senior Shannon Montgomery knew Walsh University was her destination all along.

Montgomery has even seen Cavaliers girls track and field coach Al Campbell at some of her meets - seeing her throw the shot put and discus.

"The track coach has been at the last four meets supporting me," said Montgomery, after she placed third at Friday's Division II state track and field meet in the girls discus. "That means a lot that he's there and it shows how committed coach is going to be with me."

Newton Falls throws coach Jon Culp said Montgomery said she did see if there were other offers.

"She's real excited to go there," Culp said. "It's a decision she made a long time ago. We kind of delayed that when she threw 142 and see what else is out there. She's happy with Walsh and she stuck with them."

Newton Falls track and field coach Brian Bugos said Montgomery has been very self-motivated.

"She's just had a great season finding targets and going after them," Bugos said. "She's real good at finding her own competition."

Bugos predicts Montgomery will gave a great career at Walsh.

"She's real upstanding," he said. "She's going to have a great career. She's a great representative for us. She'll continue to improve. She has a great off-season work ethic. It will be good for her."

Montgomery can't wait to be a Cavalier.

"Track means the world to me and I can't wait to move on in college," Montgomery said.
