For the fourth year in a row, teachers at Niles Middle School have been rewarding students who perform good works throughout the school year.
''Any teacher that sees a student helping others and doing good deeds can nominate that student,'' said middle school assistant principal, Sam Reigle.
Students can nominated by helping others, doing well in their classrooms or even just stopping to pick up papers and clutter in the hallways, Reigle said.
At the end of each school day, the nominated students are named over the announcements and at the end of each nine-week period, their names are drawn for prizes that include gift certificates, T-shirts, videos, video games, book bags and other items donated by school staff members and local businesses.
''About 95 percent of the prizes are donated by staff members,'' Reigle said.
At the end of the school year, all of the names from the entire year are put into a large box and grand prize winners are drawn.
This year, there were 14 grand prizes that included two bicycles, a mini-trampoline, a cornhole game set, two water guns, a workout bar, Eastwood Mall gift certificates and cash.
''There were 304 prizes given out throughout the year, not including the 14 grand prizes,'' Reigle said.
On the last day of school, the grand prize winners names were drawn and students chose their prize in the order they were drawn.
''Any student seen doing a good deed can be nominated,'' Reigle said.
