DEAR EDITOR:
Why does Trumbull County need an organization like the Animal Welfare League? The answer is simple: overpopulation and strays. Yet for more than four decades, the AWL has rejected the primary tenant of shelter management and shelter medicine.
The only way to reduce the dog and cat population is through a comprehensive, all-inclusive spay / neuter program. Even today, the AWL is proposing a huge new shelter that includes a maternity area. A shelter that adds to the problem, are you kidding me?
Re-homing unfixed strays that will create more unwanted pets is counterproductive. Bigger buildings and warehousing more animals is not the answer. The goal of every shelter should be to put themselves out of business by solving the problem. The goal should be to end the suffering and starvation that comes with overpopulation through mandatory spay / neuter. It's time for a new vision at the Animal Welfare League.
