NILES - Shepherd of the Valley is marking its 40th anniversary this year and will hold open houses at its locations in Howland, Niles, Boardman and Poland. A grand community celebration is being planned for Sept. 16.

The Niles location held its open house in May.

Other location open houses are 1 to 4 p.m. June 24, 7148 West Blvd., Boardman; 1 to 4 p.m. July 15, 301 W. Western Reserve Road, Poland; and 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 19, 4100 N. River Road, Howland.

The nursing home started in the early 1970s and acquired the Mason Wood Home and Hillcrest Apartments. In 1986, a 140-bed nursing wing was added at Niles location.

In 2000, the growth of the Niles community and increased space requirements for the business offices resulted in corporate offices moving from Niles to Austintown.

In 2003, 40 nursing beds moved from Niles to Howland. A higher level of assisted living care, Assisted Care Plus, started in Niles.

In 2011, Niles started a major remodeling project, including a wing of private rehab rooms slated to open in 2012.

In recent years, Shepherd of the Valley began the Valley Legacy Award in 2005 recognizing seniors for a lifetime of giving back to the Mahoning Valley and those who advocate for seniors.

In 2006, corporate offices moved to Silica Road, adding training and warehouse space. The first Shepherd of the Valley website was also launched.

In 2008, Shepherd established the Helen Stambaugh Award to recognize extraordinary contributions of time and time to Shepherd of the Valley.
