Elm Road Dairy Queen marks 60th anniversary

May 30, 2012
By LARRY RINGLER , Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

WARREN - It was May 1952, and Elm Road was a two-lane road that soon would have a modern shopping plaza to draw travelers.

Seemed like a good spot for a Dairy Queen ice cream store to brothers Edwin, then 25, and Arne Niemi.

Sixty years later, the business will mark a milestone today and through Sunday with classic cars and a banana split eating contest among the attractions.

Eileen said the first owners never had any doubt the business would be successful.

"People building the plaza were great customers," she said of workers who at the time were building the next-door Warren Plaza.

Edwin and Eileen Niemi's son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Kathleen Niemi, run the business after buying it in 1998. Plans are being made to add Orange Julius to the menu.

Tony Niemi said the celebration is the owners' way of thanking loyal customers and friends, adding, "We look forward to many more years of serving the community."
