CORTLAND - Marlene Rufener, 74, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 23, 2012, with her family by her side.
She was born Aug. 17, 1937, in Cortland, the daughter of the late Reed and Hazel Spencer.
Marlene was a lifelong area resident and graduate of Cortland High School, class of 1955. After high school, she married her husband, Ralph, of 56 years, Oct. 1, 1955.
Marlene was a member of Cortland United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Rambling Squares and Cross Trailers square dancing clubs. She had an incredible love for children, especially her two grandchildren.
Marlene will be dearly missed by her loving husband, Ralph; a daughter, Rhonda (Spencer) Doggett; a special daughter, Melissa (Steve) Kopp; two brothers, Gordon and Richard Spencer; two sisters, Helen Skinner and Virginia Stein; and two grandchildren, Andrew and Gabriel Devadan.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred, Robert and Benny Spencer; and her parents.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Cortland United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, where friends will be received again from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Pastor David Vensel and Pastor Mary Ann Rufener will officiate.
Interment will be in Crown Hill Burial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Marlene Rufener Memorial Fund for Children at First Place Bank, Cortland.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel.
